History
Jules Dagger Samari was born Jullien eton Anatole, prince of both Andaria and Triosa. From the moment of his birth, when his mother screamed upon first seeing him since he looked identical to the brother who had tried to kill her and her sister, Jullien was hated. While his elder twin brother received love and affection, all Jullien got was contempt, criticism, and rejection. His mother even refused to feed him as an infant, which was only discovered when a housekeeper was changing the sheets in his crib and realized he wasn’t sleeping but unconscious and unresponsive. Jullien was provided an unwilling wet-nurse after that. He was even denied exordium at birth, which according to his mother’s beliefs would automatically condemn him to Tophet, or hell, upon death.
When Jullien was six years old, his twin brother, Nykyrian, was mysteriously murdered. On the day of his brother’s funeral, Jullien was attacked by both his mother and his grandmother. His mother was furious that Jullien wasn’t crying for his brother, accused him of murdering Nykyrian, and violently attacked him. His grandmother found him crying, and beat him terribly for acting like a girl and being weak. Jullien later discovered Nyk was murdered by his grandmother, the current tadara (or queen). She used this fact as a threat against Jullien to force him to fall in line with her wishes. Distraught over Nykyrian’s death, his mother spent her time either hysterical or in a drugged stupor. At age seven, Jullien walked into his mother’s room to find one of his grandmother’s guards smothering her with a pillow. Drugged as she was, Cairistiona couldn’t fight back. Not willing to lose his mother too, Jullien drew a sword from a display and cut off the guard’s head. He then brought the severed head to his grandmother and warned her that if she ever tried to kill his mother again he would kill her and take her throne.
Jullien’s situation only became worse after that. His mother was unable to protect him (and wouldn’t even if she could) and his father refused to start a war between his empire and his grandmother’s. It left Jullien alone to the devices of his grandmother, aunts, and cousins. By the time Jullien was 12, there had been 9 attempts on his life, most of those by family. Jullien’s cousins and aunt drugged him against his will to control him throughout his childhood and early adulthood. They overdosed him eight times, sometimes with an intent to kill him. Because of this, his father, mother, and most of the Andarion Empire believed him to be a useless drug addict. He was sent to rehab (the vicious prison type) and mental institutions multiple times. The only person who seemed to be able to tolerate his presence was the cook, so Jullien spent a lot of his free time in the kitchens, scarfing down whatever he could get his hands on. As a result, he became rather overweight, which only led to more ridicule from everyone around him. Even the international news outlets tore Jullien apart constantly.
Whenever Jullien displeased his grandmother, which was often, she would imprison him in her personal underground hell, the vorgate. He could spend months at a time locked in his own personal cell while being interrogated, tortured, or re-educated by his grandmother and left to the mercy of the adult prisoners who knew who he was and hated him for it. No one particularly cared if he died, and many were purposefully trying to kill him. When Jullien was eleven, one of his cousins even managed to gut him. Jullien, however, refused to die. It was part of his stubborn streak.
Between his time in his grandmother’s vorgate, the drugs being forced into him, and the number of people trying to murder him, Jullien began acting out and trying to escape Andaria by whatever means necessary. It often got him into trouble with the law, but he didn’t particularly care. At least once he was arrested there was a chance of convincing his jailers to keep him in prison where he was instead of returning him to Andaria. Being defiant had become a coping mechanism since everyone would hate him anyway. Jullien even attempted to kill himself various times when he was young.
While Jullien was at school, he and his cousins discovered that Nykyrian hadn’t actually been killed when he arrived as a new student in their class. Terrified of what would happen to them both should someone realize that Nykyrian was Jullien’s presumably dead twin, Jullien tried to get his brother thrown out of school by accusing Nykyrian of stealing his ring. It was a misguided attempt to protect them both, and it backfired horribly on Jullien. When it was revealed that Jullien had lied, his father over-reacted to the lie. He attacked Jullien, strangling him until he was literally dead. His father then walked away while medics revived Jullien.
After graduating, Jullien enrolled in college to study the history and politics of various human empires. He would have received a doctorate at 21 had his grandmother not discovered his degree was in a human field. In fury, she cancelled the graduation and invalidated every degree that would have been given that year. Jullien was later punished for it physically as well. As heir, Jullien was betrothed to two different women; however, both of them killed themselves rather than be married to him and risk conceiving a child that would be a hybrid human-Andarion like he was.
As Eriadne’s reign continued, a rebel group called WAR became more prominent. Jullien began helping them try to overthrow his grandmother from the shadows, using the call sign Dagger Ixur. Eventually they succeed. Unfortunately for Jullien his grandmother realized he was the only one who could have given WAR the information they received that led to her downfall. In retaliation, she put out a Thrill Kill warrant on him which requested that he be tortured, desecrated, and raped prior to his death. His parents allowed the death warrant to stand. They also marked him as an Outcast and kicked him out with nothing but the clothes on his back. Jullien was left with nothing and no safe haven to turn to while his grandmother’s people, every League assassin, and every freelance assassin who wanted his bounty hunted him down.
For four years Jullien managed to survive through a combination of fighting prowess, high awareness of his surroundings, and a pure stubborn refusal to die and make everyone happy. Eventually the lack of food, shelter, and sleep combined with the number of people after him led to one mistake. An assassin managed to stab him with a poisoned blade. While he killed the assassin, the damage was already done. Jullien knew he was dying. He tried to call his father for help, but as with every other time he’d attempted contact his father refused to even take his call. Relegated to dying, Jullien decided to spend his last few credits in a bar so he could die somewhere warm and out of the rain. It was there that his life changed.
When a slaver dragged in a kid that was kicking and fighting to get away, Jullien decided he would rather die in a fight doing something good than wait for death to take him. He easily took out the slavers and protected Vasili before he collapsed unconscious from the poison. When Vasili’s mother turned up to rescue him a few minutes later, Vas refused to leave without Jullien. His mother, Ushara, reluctantly agreed and brought Jullien to the Gorturnum Tavali station despite the fact that Jullien is a member of the eton Anatoles who nearly destroyed her entire race of Fyrebloods. The commander of the Gortunum, Trajen, met Jullien and actually liked him despite the fact that Trajen hated pretty much everyone. He offered to sponsor Jullien for citizenship in his nation, which was something Trajen had never done before.
On his first morning on the station, Ushara brought Jullien a bag of fresh clothes so he had something clean to wear. It was the first act of kindness that Jullien had ever received, and it made a huge impact on him. As Jullien spent time on the Gorturnum base, he became close with Ushara and Vasili. He and Ushara marry despite her family’s complete hatred of him. It was soon after his marriage that Jullien breathed fire for the first time and he and Ushara realize that Jullien is part Fyreblood. He was actually the last Samari son thanks to his grandmother having an affair with Edon Samari before killing him. Jullien was “adopted” by the high priestess Unira Samari and began using the name Jules Dagger Samari.
When Jullien was assigned as a member of Ushara’s cousin’s crew to get the hours required to become a full citizen, her family’s hatred of him came back to bite him. Wanting to get rid of him, Ushara’s brother hatched a plan with her cousins and has Jullien sold into slavery for battle. Jullien spent four months as a combat slave before Ushara and Trajen find and rescue him. The damage had been done, however. Jullien returned basically unresponsive from the pain of the betrayal. It took a long time for him to recover, but eventually his life settled down. He and Ushara had twin daughters, Mira and Viv. Ushara’s family slowly grew to love him once they realized he was the last Samari son and see everything he was willing to do for Ushara, Vasili, and the girls.
While the twins were still young, Jullien was found by his cousin Nyran, who chipped him and threatens to destroy him and his family if he doesn’t do exactly what he’s told to help his grandmother destroy the Gorturnum and his brother so she can regain the throne. With no way to locate and remove the chip, Jullien, Trajen, and Ushara realized the only way he might survive this and win was if he undergoes Teterrimous, a Trisani procedure that can link his consciousness to a machine (his ship). The procedure worked, but because of Jullien’s hybrid genes he’s given the power not only to control his ship mentally but the abilities of a Trisani too. He can even control and infiltrate other electronic systems. Knowing that his family won’t be safe until his grandmother and cousins were dead, Jullien began plotting to take her down, again.
With his stralen eyes, he looked just like his real grandfather once he bleached his hair blond. He used this to his advantage by haunting his grandmother and making her think Edon Samari had returned for her. This advantage was what allowed him to steal the Samari Warsword and almost kill his grandmother. After escaping with the sword, he realized he’s just as bloodthirsty and uncaring as his family given any normal person would be disgusted by the idea of killing their own grandmother. Struggling with panic attacks and terrified that his tainted blood with taint his children also if he raised them, Jullien exiled himself from his family and remained hidden from them for months. Ushara and her family went after him and managed to track him down and bring him back. Once again it took time for him to pull himself back together, but with the help of his family he managed and once more focused on ending his grandmother so that his family will finally be safe.

Personality
The abandonment and emotional abuse from his mother combined with the emotional and physical abuse from his grandmother scarred Jullien from day one of his life. Never able to do anything right, Jullien quickly realized that he was absolutely worthless. Even after meeting Ushara, nothing could convince Jullien that he had value. He is very self-conscious and always considers himself a useless piece of shit. That doesn’t mean that he outwardly shows it, however. His grandmother’s treatment also taught him not to show pain. He keeps both physical and emotional pain under tight restraint. Only those who know him rather well and are looking closely would recognize the few indications of hurt in his body language.
His early life left him with more than simply his lack of self-worth. He also suffers from PTSD and panic attacks due to his family’s machinations and the constant attempts on his life. Jullien is highly paranoid. He won’t touch food that isn’t in a sealed container and even then he’ll test it in multiple ways for poison. He keeps his back to walls and is always highly attuned to his surroundings. One slip up could cost him his life, so it’s better not to trust anyone or anything.
In order to deal with his life, Jullien uses dry and morbid humor and is often rather flippant. It helps him ignore some of the horror of how he has to live. He absolutely lives to piss people off. Given nobody will like him or treat him well even if he behaves, he figures he might as well give them a reason to hate him. He’s constantly defiant and belligerent just for the fun of it. It’s especially bad when authority figures are involved. Nobody is going to give him orders. He spent enough of his childhood without choices and being boxed into corners that he refuses to do something he doesn’t want to do anymore. Generally speaking, however, all Jullien wants is to be left alone. If people leave him be, he won’t retaliate or speak harshly. However, if someone does target him it’s on. Jullien doesn’t simply fight fire with fire. He brings out the explosions and nuclear weapons. He won’t be backing down either. While his life may not have a lot of worth, if someone is going to take him out he’s going to make sure they have to pay a high price for it. He’s incredibly tenacious, both in and outside of battle. Typically people regret messing with him for that very reason given he doesn’t go down or back down easily.
Despite all of this, when dealing with the right people Jullien is actually incredibly protective and caring. He’s seen the destruction of innocence and experienced the worst humanity (if it could be called that) has to offer. He has absolutely no compunction about stepping in to put an end to something that shouldn’t be happening. He’s especially protective of children. All he truly wants is love and acceptance from other people, so when he finds people who mean a lot to him, he goes out of his way to treat them and can be incredibly sweet. He’s purposefully designed and left truly thoughtful and elaborate secret gifts for Ushara and Vasili. Jullien doesn’t necessarily even need to know someone to be kind. He often does anonymous charity work. Jullien is also incredibly astute. He can read people, understand internal motivations, and formulate political answers when necessary. This comes as a huge advantage for helping people and gaining needed support. It’s seen far less often than his more explosive anger though. Anger and belligerence are his default setting after all, so he’s much more known for his reckless, insane behaviors run by his flash temper and need for vengeance.
After being banished Jullien re-evaluated himself and now spends his life trying to make amends for his past wrongs. Even though he wasn’t truly to blame for many of them given he didn’t have a lot of options, he still feels like he needs to somehow make up for his misdeeds. In his mind, that will never be possible since he’s done too much wrong. Even if he spends his entire life trying to make up for his deeds and those of his family, he will also be a piece of trash and just like the rest of his bloodline: murderous, traitorous, and conniving. He’s well aware that there is something twisted, broken, and simply wrong with his family and that he’ll never truly escape the taint of his blood.
Andarion Culture
- Andarion only touch each other with permission. Even those providing medical treatment need to ask permission before touching an Andarion. (Jullien isn't as picky about this.)
- Andarion culture highly values females. They are the keepers of lineage and are the only ones who can adopt children or accept a mate. Mess with a female or encroach on a female that belongs to a male and that might be the last thing you do.
- Andarion culture is highly martial. They fight for pleasure and love to start fights among themselves. Strength his highly valued and all arguments (no matter how small) are solved through battle. All Andarions tend to be very quick to anger. However, it is disgraceful to fight someone weaker than yourself. All battles occur with people on the same level of ability or higher. If someone chooses to fight an Andarion, the Andarion often views it as a compliment to their strength.
- Andarion culture is based on a caste system. Lineage matters above all. An Andarion never wants to behave in a way that will disgrace their lineage. The last thing an Andarion wants is to be outcast from his lineage.
- Andarions highly value physical beauty. Scars and other markings on the body are considered disgusting and disgraceful. (Jullien doesn't care as much about this given his tattoos and he's used to being ridiculed for his appearance.)
